paul brazeau bdayHappy Birthday Paul

by Chris Anastasio

There are certain people, who make it to the top.
They kept on going, when the others stopped.
They make a tough job, seem like fun.
They work harder, when they are under the gun.
They are head and shoulders, above the rest.
They always do it right, and they do it best.
They are always running, and on the go.
When there’s something to do, they never go slow.
They are way too busy, to take a rest.
It’s always more, and never less.
They always do this, with a smile.
They are always ready, to go that extra mile.
We have that person, in our man Paul.
He works the best, when he is against the wall.
He has made it big, that’s for sure.
He had to work hard, to just endure.
At the age of 90, he just keeps going.
Like a wild wind, that just keeps blowing.
So we wish you a Happy Birthday, Paul.
You are the best, and you have done it all.

Starting Friday, May 5th - 9:30 to 10:30

Meeting in the Theater, and then every Friday thereafter same & place. This group is being formed as the coming together of kindred souls who have loved and lost and know that the way to carry on is to celebrate life, not mourn loss. For our first series of sessions we will be listening to (CD) and discussing the amazing book, Heaven, by Randy Alcorn. If you’re unfamiliar with this book you’re in for a treat. Talk about celebrating life! This is not just any book on Heaven – it is likely the best ever written about celebrating life. Well, just wait and see. We hope to also bring in guest speakers at some point and to go on Celebrating Life outings. Sign up on the sign up sheet coming soon and join us!

2017 mothers dayCRABBY OLD LADY

What do you see nurses? . .. . What do you see? What are you thinking .. .. .. when you're looking at me? A crabby old lady .. .. .. not very wise, Uncertain of habit .. .. .. with faraway eyes? Who dribbles her food .. .. .. and makes no reply. When you say in a loud voice .. .. .. 'I do wish you'd try!' Who seems not to notice .. .. .. the things that you do. And forever is losing .. .. .. A sock or shoe? Who, resisting or not .. .. .. lets you do as you will, With bathing and feeding .. .. .. a long day to fill? Is that what you're thinking? .. .. .. Is that what you see? Then open your eyes, nurse .. . .. you're not looking at me. I'll tell you who I am .. .. .. As I sit here so still, As I do at your bidding, .. .. .. as I eat at your will. I'm a small girl of Ten . .. . with a father and mother, Brothers and sisters .. .. .. who love one another. A young girl of Sixteen .. .. .. with wings on her feet. Dreaming that soon now .. .. .. a lover she'll meet. A bride soon at Twenty .. .. .. my heart gives a leap. Remembering, the vows .. .. .. that I promised to keep. At Twenty-Five, now .. .. .. I have young of my own. Who need me to guide .. .. .. a secure happy home. A woman of Thirty . .. .. My young now grown fast, Bound to each other .. .. ..With ties that should last. At Forty, my young sons .. .. .. have grown and are gone, But my man is beside me . .. . to see I don't mourn. At Fifty, once more, .. .. .. babies play 'round my knee, Again, we know children .. .. .. My husband and me. Dark days are upon me .. .. .. my husband's now dead. I look at the future .. .. .. and shudder with dread. For my young are all rearing .. .. .. young of their own. And I think of the years .. .. . and the love that I've known. I'm now an old woman .. . .. and nature is cruel. 'Tis jest to make old age .. .. .. look like a fool. The body, it crumbles .. .. .. grace and vigor depart. There is now a stone .. . .. where I once had a heart. But inside this old carcass .. .. .. a young girl still dwells, And now and again .. .. .. my battered heart swells. I remember the joys .. .. .. I remember the pain. And I'm loving and living .. .. .. life over again. I think of the years, all too few .. .. .. gone too fast. And accept the stark fact .. .. . that nothing can last. So open your eyes, people .. .. .. open and see. Not a crabby old woman .. .. .. look closer .. .. .. see ME!!

bertha rodriguezMay Employee of the Month

Bertha Garcia De Rodriguez

Bertha was born in Tejupilco de Hildago (aka Hidalgo) which is a state in Mexico. You can find it right down near Mexico City, in the center of Mexico. First off, did you know that Mexico has 31 states? I know I didn’t, and we live so close!

Bertha worked for two years as a secretary for a lawyer in Mexico. She’s a smart cookie! Then in 1994 she met Juan Rodriguez Garcia in Mexico and they married in 1995. After just one month they came to the United States. Bertha was pregnant with her first child, Nancy. Do you know Nancy? She works in our food service department? Some of the employees were flabbergasted recently to learn that Nancy was Bertha’s daughter. Then they almost fell of their chairs to learn that Jocelyn, also in the food service department is Bertha’s other daughter! Bertha also has a daughter, Denice who is in fifth grade.

Before Bertha started working at the Villas she worked for the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Housekeeping for 2 ½ years. She applied at the Villas in July of 2003 as a housekeeper. She did that for four years, and then went on to work as a caregiver. And we’re so happy she did. Everyone knows Bertha as very caring, responsible, and professional with resident care. She wants to make a difference every day in the residents’ lives. Her best reward, she says, is when she sees them smile.

Her supervisor Amelia says, “I feel so proud to have Bertha in assisted living. She has been an excellent caregiver in our department.”

witty knittersThe Knit Wits

WITTY KNITTERS to steal the term from Dana Point’s local news, the “DP Times”, is about an article published recently (February, 2017) written by Kristina Pritchett. The full article can be seen at www.danapointtimes. com. The article features our own Jessie Strike, Margo Grube and her daughter Cindy, along with five other ladies who all knit blankets for Camp Pendleton parents. That’s Margo front left, and Jessie next to her in the photo, and Margo’s daughter Cindy in the middle of the back row. The “San Clemente Knit Wits” have donated hundreds of blankets, booties, hats and more to parents at Camp Pendleton that are expecting a child. It all began years ago at an aerobics class at Ole Hanson Beach Club. One of the members of the aerobics class mentioned that she had started taking items such as diapers and baby wipes to young couples at Camp Pendleton. That birthed (forgive the pun) the idea of making baby blankets, asMargo will tell you. She’s a Villas resident and one of the groups’ original members! In fact, member Carol (see below) was just here at the Villas and told me, “Margo Grube and I got a count of our baby sets for Camp Pendleton Baby Boot Camp. So far we have 125 sets that we will deliver April 24th. That’s a record for us. The last delivery we made to Baby Boot Camp was December 19. At that time we took just over 100 sets.” If any of San Clemente Villas’ residents are interested in either joining the group or donating their own creations, email group member Carol Hagedorn at This email address is being protected from spambots. amelia diazApril Employee of the Month

Amelia Diaz

Before coming to the Villas Amelia was a private caregiver in Laguna Beach (Emerald Bay). She was with a couple there for 6 years (2000- 2006). But let’s go back. Where did this beautiful lady get her start? Well, when Amelia was in fourth grade her teacher asked, “what do you want to do when you grow up?” Amelia said she really thought she would be a teacher or a nurse. Amelia’s father had left the family when Amelia was only five, so her mother was mother and father for the eight children consisting of five boys and 3 girls. Amelia said her mother was an excellent mother and provider. This was all inMexico.

Amelia came to California in 1975 with her mom and brothers when she was 17 years old. Immediately she went to work in a strawberry field, doing that for three years. “Not only strawberries but all vegetables, you name it!” She was grateful, she needed a job as she needed to help support her mother and brothers. She also worked in a factory for a year, in a hotel for housekeeping and in a fast food restaurant. In the beginning, as you can imagine,Amelia was scared because she didn’t know English. It was difficult for her to communicate. She never went to school here, but she learned English by working.

Amelia met the father of her children, Domingo, at San Clemente Ranch (south end of town). It was love at first sight. She was 19, he was 23. The two went on to have four children; three daughters Ruby, Arlene and Aricelli and one son Javier. They range in age now from 29-36, and all are out on their own. Amelia has seven grandchildren that she adores. All of Amelia’s children and grandchildren live in the area so she gets to see them often. Sadly Domingo passed away last year.

But how did she come to work at the Villas? In April of 2006 Amelia applied for a job as caregiver at the Villas. They called her two days later for an interview and she got the job. She was working as a caregiver for almost three years when she got the promotion to be a supervisor. I know everyone at the Villas joins me in expressing our love and gratitude for Amelia. She has a servants heart and a genuine love for the residents. The Villas, the residents, and her friends are all very lucky, indeed, to have Amelia in our lives!

mario veluzMarch Employee of the Month

Mario Veluz

Mario came to the Villas after applying with Anna at the now closed San Clemente Hospital. While applying at the hospital they saw the Villas and came over so Anna could fill out an application. Mario says, “She applied on Friday and started on Monday.” But wait! How many of you thought Anna and Mario met here at the Villas? They even got married here! So where did they meet? Mario says they met in Houston, Texas where the two were in a securities training seminar at the same time. They started dating. Mario said his friends kind of pushed Mario to date (truth is, he had just broken up with someone and wasn’t interested in dating). Well, it wasn’t long, and the two got serious. Then Mario’s mother, who lives in Upland, needed more help, so Mario and Anna moved to California. Anna had gone online and found work at a Subway near Camp Pendleton where she became manager. Mario became manager of another Subway. Around that time Mario began doing work on the house that his parents owned in San Clemente. Eventually the couple moved into that house. So now we’re back to where they were applying at the hospital, but ended up working at the Villas. How did Mario get his job? Anna loved working at the Villas so much, that Mario decided to apply as well. His first job at the Villas was in Dining and Deli. Then the owners of the Villas discovered how personable and talented he was and had him start doing some of the activities. And that, he says, is when he found his calling. It took a while, but after Barbara came on as the Activities Director, Mario began working inActivities full time. Mario’s favorite part about the Villas is the interaction with the residents, especially the brain games that he does with them. Barbara appreciates Mario’s reliability and attention to his work. “It’s a joy and relief to know he’s taking care of everything, I can concentrate on what I have to do” she says. The truth is, all the residents love Mario, and this is why he was nominated and selected as our employee of the month for March! Congratulations Mario, you are a treasure to the Villas!

karina alayFebruary Employee of the Month

Karina Alay

Karina started working at San Clemente Villas about two years ago. Now she’s been recommended for “Employee of the Month” for February. Is it because she is a friendly, happy person who loves to smile, laugh and stay positive every day? Absolutely! But we also found out that her favorite thing about working at the Villas is giving companionship to the residents because she believes they are the most important people at the Villas. Amen to that Karina! She says it is important to also work to ensure residents are safe. In fact, Karina is a Certified Nurse Assistant/Home Health Aid and has been for the past 15 years. She enjoys this line of work and cannot picture herself choosing any other career or job. Karina is a single mother to five wonderful kids, three girls and two boys. In her spare time she loves spending time with them. They go to the movies, eat out, or go to the park. Karina would like to thank her co-workers, supervisors and the owners of the Villas for working together as a “family”, being supportive and working hard for the residents and their families. She appreciates that. And we appreciate YOU Karina! Keep up the awesome work.
