Tax Deductibility
Long-Term Care Services & Assisted Living
In 1996 the United States government Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) ruled that "long-term care services" may be tax deductible as an unreimbursed medical expense on Schedule A of your tax return! (IRS code section 213)* Previously, only typical medical expenses were tax deductible.
Currenty long-term care services are all now considered medical, for example the assisted care that you receive at San Clemente Villas (meal preparation, household cleaning, and any other assistance with daily living activities). A licensed health care practitioner must Write a letter stating you need assistance in two or more "activities of daily living".
We recommend that you consult with your tax advisor to determine the amount you may deduct.
Please see your accountant if you are interested in exploring this possibility further.
