"The air is like a butterfly
With frail blue wings.
The happy earth looks at the sky
And sings."

- Joyce Kilmer, Spring

Spring is in the air! All around us there are signs of renewal, as we enjoy the beautiful green hillsides from the recent rains, fresh new flowers in our Courtyard and Cabana area, and the warmer breezes and longer afternoons as we move toward Spring on Saturday, March 20th!

Spring is also a great time to refresh our outlook. Make a fitness resolution by joining one of our exercise classes. Tap into your creative side by coming to a painting or craft class. Join us with suggestions for a new club, or try one of our new exciting outings. Make one new friend by talking to a neighbor you’ve never met. Or, put some Spring in your step by joining our new walking club on their “Mission to Fitness”.

March is also a great time to experiment with new foods! Chef has added some exciting selections to the menu with his great team of cooks. Try some of these fresh and exciting new options and let us know what you think!

As we “March into Spring” together, please remember that all of our friendly staff are committed to your happiness and wellbeing. Please reach out to any of us if there is something you need or to share your praises or concerns. We’re all here for you!

Happy Spring!

Bending from Heaven, in azure mirth,
It kissed the forehead of the Earth,
And smiled upon the silent sea,
And bade the frozen streams be free,
And waked to music all their fountains,
And breathed upon the frozen mountains...
~Percy Bysshe Shelley

After the heyday of the holidays has ended, we transition to February and eagerly await the coming of Spring. For those of us lucky enough to live in sunny California, Spring is when we will begin to see the weather improve as bulbs planted in theWinter begin to unfurl in beautiful colors across the garden. This month also gives us even more opportunities to try new events, and activities. Our Activity team is always looking for new and exciting things to add for your enjoyment, and we welcome your suggestions and ideas! This month, we will celebrate Groundhog Day. Valentine’s Day,Mardi Gras, President’s Day, and Chinese New Year!

As we navigate the world following our vaccinations, we will be adding in new adventures as we are safely able to, always with your health, safety and wellbeing in mind. All of our precautions will remain in place for now, and gradually we will expand our activities and outreach to achieve a “new normal”.

In January, I discovered the resolution: “Begin asYou Mean To Continue”. For February, why not go outside of your comfort zone and try one new thing on the calendar that you’ve never tried before. Join us for a craft class. Come and experience a new entertainer. Participate in a new event, join our Walking Club, or share an idea for a new activity or outing.. Give it a try, and be sure to let us know how you liked it!

Happy February!

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne."
- Robert Burns, Auld Lang Syne

My father’s family was from Scotland, and we grew up with the fabulous works of Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Waler Scott, …and of course Robert (Rabbie) Burns. The song “Auld Lang Syne is traditionally sung on New Year’s Eve (or Hogmanay in Scotland). The meaning of the phrase translated to English comes to be “old long since”..but we can think of it as “days gone by”. The tune had been around since the 16th century before Mr. Burns put pen to paper, and to this day we sing it in remembrance of times gone by, while drinking a cup of kindness with friends (or a “wee dram” as our father called it..).

With the upcoming holidays, and the New Year (which we are all looking forward to!), we remember with fondness times past, as we look forward and prepare for the coming year. Charles Lamb once said “New Year’s Day is everyone’s birthday”. What a great thought! Thinking of the new year as a new beginning, full of new opportunities and experiences…what a joyful concept!

On behalf of all of us here at San Clemente Villas by the Sea…our warmest wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous new year for each of you and your families.

Best Wishes,

"The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown,
Of all trees that are in the wood,
The holly bears the crown:
O, the rising of the sun,
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ,
Sweet singing in the choir."
- Christmas Carol

December holiday cheer is in the air, and even though we have had to find new ways to provide entertainment and keep our residents engaged and active, we are looking forward to lots of fun and exciting events here at The Villas! Everyone has come together throughout the past months to learn new things, try new approaches, and most of all stay safe in an ever changing situation.

We are celebrating “Holidays Around the World” with weekly themed Happy Hours every Friday poolside, and are adding lots of fun filled holiday themed events that can safely be managed within our current safety guidelines. With things changing so frequently on the regulatory front, we stay vigilant for any changes to what we are permitted to do, with the hope that we can expand our delivery of activities soon.

As the holidays approach, and we look to the New Year we are mindful of friends, family and those who brighten our lives. On behalf of all of us here at San Clemente Villas by the Sea, we wish you a safe and happy holiday!

Stay well.

““October gave a party;

And leaves of every name.

~George Cooper, October's Party

Autumn has arrived and as the temperatures cool, we look forward to savory fall meals, apple treats and cider, a warm cozy blanket and the company of good friends or a good book. Here at San Clemente Villas by the Sea we have already begun planning for the upcoming holiday season, to make sure we have everything prepared for our residents and all to enjoy! October is the month ofWorld Smile Day, Indigenous People Day (formerly known as Columbus Day), Dictionary Day and of course…Halloween!

The metaphor for October is transformation. Leaves change colors, the weather changes from warm to cool, sweaters and cardigans come out of storage to change up our wardrobe choices. The Villas has gone through a transformation as well, as we’ve faced the challenges of the coronavirus and learned new ways to live together and support each other during these ever-changing times.

As always, the Villas family of staff are here to help. If you need anything at all, please let us know…we’re all in this together, and we are here to support you.

Happy Autumn, and stay well.

‘Tis moonlight, summer moonlight,

All soft and still and fair;

The solemn hour of midnight

Breathes sweet thoughts everywhere

~Emily Bronte~

Growing up as a child, I was very fortunate to have two greataunts and a great-uncle living next door to us. My elegant aunts allowed me access to dusty attic trunks full of beautiful hats and clothes, beads and brooches, and spritzes of cologne from the lovely glass atomizers on their dressing tables. Many a Summer day was spent enjoying a picnic in all of our finery in the garden my Aunt Hilda tended daily. They insisted on cloth napkins and good manners, clean faces and hands, and sitting up straight. Aunt Edna made the most delicious scones I’ve ever tasted, and we would sit outdoors for hours, visiting and enjoying the Summer sun. Our Uncle John was a stately gentleman who had been a judge, and although he was rather stoic my younger brother could always manage to coax him and his driver Jim to take us on outings for ice-cream on a hot afternoon. These genteel ladies taught me the importance of attention to detail, as well as how to embroider, bake, garden and sew. Overall, I learned that” gracious living is the result of meticulous planning” asAunt Edna would say. No guest came to visit that was not met with a warm smile, a good cup of tea, and a well cooked meal or “nosh” as she called any food eaten out of the timeframe of a meal. As we welcome August here at San Clemente Villas by the Sea, I recall these Summer memories, and all of the effort that went in to making them special for us. My staff and I are working together to bring this same attention to detail to all of the events and services that we provide to you; our residents, and to assure that all of our residents enjoy themselves, even during these challenging times. Please know that your suggestions will be met with a ready ear and an open mind. The San Clemente Villas staff and I are available to discuss your suggestions and concerns personally, through voice mail, or email. Drop by for a visit, or drop a note in the suggestion box at the Front Desk. Our passion is, and should always be, to make your lives better.

Here’s to a beautiful Summer!

" O beautiful for spacious skies
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountains majesty
Above thy fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!"
Katherine Lee Bates

Summer! As a young girl growing up in Western New York, I dreamt of it in late Fall as the air turned crisp. I waited for it patiently as we bundled up and shoveled a path to our road to walk to school, each of us with a hot scone in our pocket (wrapped in foil to help keep us...and it...warm), and somewhat less patiently as that same white blanket of snow turned gray and slushy in Spring. As we move into the warmer months, we're helping residents take some time to enjoy the great weather, and all of the lovely amenities we have here at San Clemente Villas. Our front Courtyard, patio and beautiful poolside areas are consciously designed to help residents relax, listen to the fountains, enjoy the flowers and birds, and catch some healthy rays to boost their Vitamin D. We invite them to try a scenic drive on our cool new van, join our walking group, or sit with a friend and visit outdoors! Our Happy Hours and wine mixers will be incorporating more outdoor sun time this month, and we look forward to seeing residents join in for some Summer Time Fun! This month, we also celebrate America and our Independence with a plethora of patriotic activities and events, including our Fourth of July Resident Barbecue and celebration. We are always excited to hear new ideas from our residents on things they would like to try...we ask that they drop a suggestion at the Front Desk, or feel free to email any of us! Our email addresses are our first names and then @sanclementevillas.com.

Happy Summer!

New Month of June Update

Dear San Clemente Villas Extended Family,

I hope this finds you all healthy and well. We currently have no reported cases of COVID-19 at the Community, and are working diligently to prevent exposure and continue that success.

Over the last 12 weeks, we’ve implemented stringent precautionary measures, intensive cleaning and disinfecting protocols and a COVID-19 screening process that not only records vital health statistics but also tracks a person’s personal travel and recent contacts. Our reception teams have expanded their role beyond the hospitality we are known for to become a first line of defense, with careful screening of anyone who comes to our door.  We’ve restricted visitors, allowing only those most essential: medical, hospice and end of life visitors.  Our front patio area has been redesigned to promote social distancing and prevent exposure, and we have created a dedicated Visiting Window with shaded seating for safe visits. We’ve fought to not only mitigate the spread of this virus but also try to lessen the impacts of these extraordinary precautions on families and loved ones. It’s a delicate balance we constantly strive to achieve.

This disease isn’t over, but we do believe we see light at the end of the tunnel. We’d like to share that light with you, but we also need your help. Quarantine has lasted too long and we must do something about it, but there will be limits based on both regulatory directives and prudence. We have worked hard to put our community in the best position to get back to as close to normal as possible – as quickly as possible – but it’s going to be a progressive process. Each step must be taken as safely as the last. Most crucially, we must continually prove to state and local regulators that we are ready, and advocate for allowing each next step. We believe people belong together. Isolation cannot be a permanent strategy for any society, especially for our residents.

As California begins to ease some of the constraints currently in place, it unfortunately doesn’t mean our residents are any less vulnerable. We can all agree some of the changes in how we work, care for and interact with our residents and teammates will continue into the future. So, we are continuing to consult with leading health and wellness experts and are developing a phased approach to plan for the future. We want to be sure the path we take is thoughtful, careful and focuses on creating a community environment that emphasizes safety for everyone. Everything from our cautious return to restaurant dining to easing visitation and trip restrictions is being meticulously planned for by our operations team.

We’re all in this together…and here at the Villas that sentiment has become our mantra. Staff are going above and beyond to think outside of the box and support our residents, and each other, during this difficult time. Our conscientiously planned activities are vibrant and filled with love and laughter. Our residents are coming together in new ways to visit each other, and supplement the social element of what we do here at the Villas. New friendships have been formed, new experiences are being had, and we maintain an attitude of gratitude, optimism and hope. Thank you all for your continued support, compliance and patience.

Stay well,

Laura

It is the month of June,
The month of leaves and roses,
When pleasant sights salute the eyes
And pleasant scents the noses."
- Nathaniel Parker Willis, The Month of June

Dear Residents and Families,

Thank you all for the warm welcome I have received since my arrival at San Clemente Villas by the Sea in mid-March. I look forward to working closely with the residents, families and staff as your Executive Director, and assuring your continued happiness with our many services and amenities.

April and May were busy months for us here at The Villas as we worked through implementing our current COVID precautions and adjusting our daily lives to protect our residents and staff from exposure. Amidst it all, we celebrated Mother’s Day, and enjoyed a great Cinco de Mayo Hallway Happy Hour. In June, we are looking to add more Covid conscious activities for our residents, while maintaining the precautions that are keeping us healthy and virus free.

Father’s Day is just around the corner, and we will celebrate with a special Barbecue Supper honoring all of our special men, including a wide variety of pie selections for our residents to enjoy. This month, we also welcome Summer to our lovely home on June 20th! We’ll have a special beach themed Happy Hour on the 19th to help ring in the warmer weather, with music and delicious summer themed appetizers. We will also be sprucing up our outdoor seating areas, adding some new flowering plants to our pool area and courtyard, and freshening up the patio seating for all to enjoy, while we maintain our social distancing but get outdoors for some fresh air and sunshine.

Please feel free to stop by my office if you have any questions or would just like to meet in person. I’m also available by phone, text or email. I look forward to getting to know each of you in the days and weeks to come!

Best Regards,

Laura Kephart

"Now the bright morning star, day's harbinger,
Comes dancing from the east, and leads with her
The flowery May, who from her green lap throws
The yellow cowslip, and the pale primrose.
Hail, bounteous May, that doth inspire
Mirth, and youth, and warm desire;
Woods and groves are of thy dressing,
Hill and dale doth boast thy blessing,
Thus we salute thee with our early song,
And welcome thee, and wish thee long."
- John Milton, Song on a May Morning

May is here, and our surrounding hillsides are bright with fresh grass, lupines and mustard as far as the eye can see! At home, May is when I re-plant my front garden and add native milkweed to our butterfly habitat there. Our gardens here at The Villas are being refurbished, and we will be adding plants to the Front entrance as well as out by the pool area for all to enjoy.

May is also the month for remembering and honoring our Mother’s. We have so many lovely, kind and caring ladies here, it’s like having many Mothers every time we come to work! This month is a celebration of all our Moms, who do so much to make our lives richer and fuller.

We also honor our military, with Armed Forces Day, and remember those we have lost on Memorial Day this month. Barbara and her team are working diligently to find new ways to entertain within the constraints of our current virus restrictions. We hope to come up with even more fun things to do as we all work together to stay healthy and well.

Happy May! Laura
