Welcome August! The summer is definitely here, so enjoy this beautiful weather, as time passes by so quickly! We would like to give a warm welcome to our new resident Irene L.! The West Indies residents will be relaxing on our patio, enjoying barbeques and beautiful scenic rides! I want to take a moment to thank all of our staff for everything they do for our residents! The daily kindness, patience and encouragement they provide is so important in our daily lives as we age. How fortunate we are to have a loving and caring staff here in the West Indies. As a little tribute to them I asked our residents if they had any comments to share. Virginia C. said their warm friendly smile and caring voice is enough to start her day off well! “It’s nice to know someone is always here to ask if I need any help.” Betty M. said she likes all the caregivers, they are very nice to her. They do their job without complaining. She said she’d like to give them a little something to show her appreciation! Don L. said, “Sometimes I lose track of time reading the newspaper in my room it is very helpful when they remind me that dinner is ready! I like the way they do my laundry. I have enjoyed some good times here with my wife!” Anne and Bob G. said, “It is wonderful how quickly they respond when help is needed. They are really special people and get the job done well! We feel very lucky to be here!” The West Indies Staff and residents wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe summer!

Marketing Check-in: Happy 4th of July

ezmeralda lopez dianna mendoza

It’s unbelievable to say we’re in July already. Due to Quarantine I feel that half of the year just went by and we didn’t even notice. COVID-19 brought me closer to my family and it reminded me that I need to stop and reach out to family whom I hadn’t visited in a long time. I picked up my phone and called a lot of my aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends to make sure they were doing well and see if they needed anything. At home we have been spending a lot of time together watching movies, listening to music and even playing board games together - something we hadn’t done in a long time. Both my kids got to get home-schooled by their aunt. At first it was all very nice, but after a while my sister-in-law would tell me “I don’t know how these teachers do it!” I laughed at first and then when I took a couple days off work and helped her at home I was ready to get back to work as soon as possible. I would like to say thank you to all the essential workers here at San Clemente Villas. Thank you for all you do. And a big thank you to all the nurses, doctors, grocery store workers, and first responders - all of you are there for us. 2020 is a year we will never forget and I feel like it has brought all of us closer together and we will continue to get through it together.

We would like to give a warm welcome to new resident Anne G! Happy Birthday to resident Don L. July 12th and employee’s Alicia Aguilera on the 18th as well as employee Ana Aparicio on the 19th. July is such a great month if you love warm weather, Fourth of July celebrations and kicking back on the beach! TheWest Indies residents will be enjoying our weekly barbecues, relaxing on the patio and beautiful scenic rides! I asked some of our residents what special Fourth of July memory they had. Ray R. loved watching water fireworks in Thailand! Viola M. lived in a small town in Kansas with her 12 brothers and sisters and they would go to a park and her Dad would cook a large pot of beans. Luckily they had a large porch where they would watch the fireworks! John P. said his parents built a swimming pool in their yard and they invited the neighbors over for Fourth of July. I asked if they brought food to share. He said no but they brought their children! Pat R. wore all blue and dressed her children up as firecrackers to join in with the town parade! Take time out this Fourth of July to be thankful and remember our Veterans who fought for the freedom we have today! We should have be full of pride and honor to be Americans! We need to work together peacefully to fix any injustices and improve upon what we have!

The West Indies Staff and residents wish everyone a wonderful and safe Fourth of July! Have a relaxing summer!

Meet the Nurses

We have some new faces here at the 'Villas!

Kristin Rodriguez - Wellness Nurse

I am a California native. I was born in Long Beach. I graduate from Long Beach Poly. After I graduated I joined the Air Force and was a MWR- Morale welfare and recre- ation specialist. My job duties in- cluded working the fitness center and in the mortuary. I was released with an honorable discharge due to pregnancy. I stayed home and raised my three children and then in 2006 I started part time nursing school. I graduated in 2009 and then started working at Villa Valencia as a med tech and then became the Wellness Nurse there until coming to San Clemente Villas by the Sea. My dad was a nurse in the cardiac cath lab. I was able to watch an open heart sur- gery and then knew I wanted to be a nurse. I choose to work in assisted living instead of being a cardiac nurse because while in nursing school working with the eld- erly population was so rewarding. My goal is to become an RN in the future. I love what I do each and every day.

Cara Deiro - Director of Clinical Services

My favorite animals are Horses and English Bull dogs. I was born in Memphis Tennessee down the street from Elvis Presley. My dad was in the Marines and we move to the El Toro Marine base when I was 13. My Grandmother and my mother were both nurses and my great great Grandfather was a Doctor in Silerton Tennessee. I grew up hanging out at hos- pitals and nursing homes. At the age of 16 I became a Certified Nursing Assistant and worked in skilled nursing with my mom as my supervisor. My senior year of High School I completed a Medical Assistant program and went to work for a dermatologist and became a surgical assistant. I graduated Nursing school in 1993 and worked for Lake Forest Nursing Center for 17 years as an LVN and Di- rector of Staff Development. I have been in management most of my nursing career in skilled nursing and Assisted Living communities. I be- lieve that Nursing is the Gentle Art of caring. It is my passion in life to follow my family’s footsteps and doing what I can to enhance the lives of the residents I care for each and every day. Any Questions or con- cerns, please feel free to reach out to me at the community or email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. This year Mother’s Day is observed on May 10th. It is time to honor all mothers for their love and contributions to their family! What is a mom? Well I really don’t think there is a sheet of paper large enough to list everything that they are! So moms, just kick back and relax Mother’s Day is your day! I asked our residents siblings to share something heartwarming or funny about their mother. Viola’s daughter Barbara replied “my mom was an accomplished pianist”. She gave many years to the church playing for Sunday services. I loved hearing her play when we were practicing for church or just playing what she liked. She taught me to play. I got many years of joy at the piano. Thanks Mom! Patricia R. sons Rick and Phil said she always knew how to throw a great party! Once in Spain in 1969 she didn’t just hire a band but instead an entire Choir and Guitar band from the local Medical College known as “Tunas”!

Rick and Phil were only 11 and 7 but we were blown away. See photo below. Everybody danced and sang. Our young Spanish maid was 19 and she fell in love with the handsome young men!

Everyone at the party had so much fun lots of martinis and hangovers! Dora V. daughter Brenda replied “Dear Mommy, One of the fondest memories I have of you was your ability to comfort me in troubling times or when I was upset about something. You would sit me on your lap and hug me until I would stop crying. Then you would make me drink a glass of water. It was like magic. During this time of the pandemic, I could really use one of those hugs! It’s very difficult for me not to be with you right now, but I know how well you are taken care of at the Villas, and I know how wonderful the staff treats you! I love you mom!”

We would like to wish a Happy Birthday to residents Claude C. 3rd, Karin H. the 5th, Patricia R. 15th, Trinidad B. on the 19th and John P. 28th. Also our Med Tech Dollie on the 29th! Even with this exhausting pandemic please try to enjoy each day as much as you can. Life passes by so quickly.

Love to all! Take care and keep safe! From Leslie, Rey, Joe and all the West Indies staff and Residents!

April showers will bring May flowers, so don’t let the rain get you down! There’s great weather ahead! Residents will be enjoying beautiful scenic rides and weekly barbeques!

We would like to give a warm welcome to our new resident Betty M! Happy Birthday to our beautiful residents Betty D. 4/10, Carol T. 4/13, Dolly V. 4/19 and Martha C. 4/28! On April 1st don’t believe everything you hear!

As you know, April Fool’s Day each year is celebrated by playing practical jokes on each other! Happy Easter on April 12th! It has always been an exciting time of the year! Our residents will be busy decorating eggs, having an egg hunt and eating chocolate bunnies! Of course this isn’t the real reason we celebrate Easter. As Christians, we celebrate Easter as the day of Jesus Christ’s resurrection.

I would like to take a moment to reflect on our manager Rey Santos. He is a man that works very hard to keep our Department together. He has earned the trust from our Staff and Resident families. He is always trying to make everything around us better! We are very fortunate to have him on our team!

Have a warm and wonderful month from Leslie, Rey, Joe and all the West Indies staff and Residents!

Marketing Check-in: Happy Easter

ezmeralda lopez dianna mendoza

Holidays are many things to many people. For some, the primary function of a holiday is its religious significance. It is a time when specific spiritual opportunities are available to experience. For others, holidays are primarily about family getting together. Most people do not work and so there is an opportunity to renew family bonds. Relatives that you haven't seen in a while join together with you to celebrate the family that you belong to. People that do not have large families or may not want to join together with them may celebrate with friends. Enjoy this time with your loved ones and remember to always tell them how much they mean to you and how much you love them. (Be sure to see our Notary Ad in our April newsletter.)

We would like to give a warm welcome to our new resident John P.! Happy Birthday to our Manager Rey Santos 3/13/72 and our beautiful resident Sandy 3/20/26!

We are looking forward to daylight savings time March 8th bringing us more sunshine throughout the day! How exciting! Spring is in the air, beginning March 19th warmer weather ahead! Residents will be relaxing on the patio!

Well the “lucky month of March” has arrived! We have leprechauns, rainbows and pots of gold lurking among us! There seems to be a little bit of Irish in all of us celebrating and having fun! Make sure you wear green or you’ll get pinched! Do you know why? The Country of Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle; therefore Countrymen are expected to wear green in honor of their country. If you do not wear green your fellow countrymen will pinch you to remind you that you are of Irish decent!

I would like to thank all the West Indies Staff for all their hard work and dedication every day! There is a lot of love, compassion and understanding from every staff member, and it is shown in many ways! Wishing you all the luck of the Irish and a Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

Happy New Year 2020!

It’s a new Decade! Dianna and Esme would love to wish you a prosperous and healthy 2020! The New Year is bittersweet. It is nice to go forward and make resolutions but it is sad to see another year slip by. I’m making the resolution to slow down and experience pleasurable moments a little longer especially with my kids. Time passes by very quickly and we tend to forget to really enjoy life and our surroundings more. We are so happy and blessed to have gained a lot of new residents this past year and looking forward to the new resident’s that will be moving in this next year. At the villas we have many events throughout the year where you can come enjoy the music, try our dining room, visit with residents, and enjoy each other’s company. One thing that I love about San Clemente Villas is that we are all a family here.

We wish you the best and brightest New Year!

Marketing Check-in: Welcome December!

ezmeralda lopez dianna mendoza

Welcome December!

Being Santa!

Being Santa must be fun!

Giving gifts to everyone

And riding on a magic sleigh

Jingle jingle all the way.

He’s read a billion Christmas lists,

Employed some elves to wrap the gifts,

Fed the reindeer, tied his boots

And slipped into his nice red suit.

Setting out on Christmas Eve,

Flying over towns and trees,

To every place, down every road

To all the children round the globe.

It’s such a feat of dedication

Speeding to each destination

With a smile upon his face

Then onwards, to another place.

When he’s been all round the world

To every boy and every girl

And left some presents to be found,

His work is done; he’s homeward bound!

Mince pies and milk, he’s had plenty.

His heart is full, his sack is empty.

He cheers as he returns, a winner.

Home in time for Christmas dinner!

“Being Santa” is a short Christmas poem

Christmas is an exciting time of the year with family, friends, lights, decorations, cheery music and festive holiday meals! This is the one day of the year to remind us we have so much to be thankful for! So, what is the spirit of Christmas? The answer can be said in one sentence “Giving without the thought of getting”. In the West Indies that means serving and giving with extra love and care. We know this is what makes the residents feel the spirit of Christmas! December is a very busy month for all of us. Our residents will be taking photos on 12/7 with Santa and enjoying a special family Christmas party on December 19th with their loved ones. We’ll be decorating cookies and singing Christmas songs! Christmas time brings up many Holiday memories, so I asked the residents to share a favorite one! Viola M. said “I loved riding to church in our sleigh and singing Christmas songs with the choir”! Eleanor W. enjoyed decorating the Christmas tree with her family. Her favorite Christmas ever was when she was 10 years old and got a new bike! Happy Birthday to Bobby K. on 12/10/32! May your family Holiday’s be filled with joy and peace! Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Remember, its not what’s under the tree that counts that matters, It’s who is gathered around it! Blessings to All!

May your stuffing be tasty

Marketing Check-in: Welcome October!

Welcome October!

Falling leaves are summer waving goodbye. So that means that this month calls for colder weather, hot cocoa, warm blankets, cozy sweaters and everyone preparing for a spooky Halloween. It’s always fun to be a part of Halloween. Whether it’s preparing your home with all the scary decorations, lights, chocolates and candies or being the parent/grandparent taking the kids out to trick-or-treat, seeing their gleaming faces when receiving treats and how astounded they are by all the décor, lights, and others costumes. Here at San Clemente Villas, we hope everyone has a safe and HAPPY HALLOWEEN. We also wish San Clemente Villas a Happy 17th Anniversary!

OCTOBER

THE MONTH OF OCTOBER,
THE AIR TURNS COLD.
THE LEAVES ARE ALL CHANGING,
TO RED AND TO GOLD.
THE MONTH OF OCTOBER,
AND PUMKINS I’VE SEEN.
THEY’RE OUT TRICK OR TREATING,
IT’S NOW HALLOWEEN

Marketing Check-in: Fall is Coming!

ezmeralda lopez dianna mendoza

Fall is Coming!

For most of us, September makes us think of back-to-school preparations and the upcoming Fall holidays. We also think of New York as it will be 18 years since the 9/11 tragedy. It’s true what they say.You don’t remember what you did one week ago but you will never forget what you were doing that morning of 9/11. I was getting ready for school and my grandma usually made my breakfast. Well, not that morning. She was sitting in front of the TV crying and I remember asking her what was going on. That day at school no one did any work, all classes had the TV on watching the news. It was a horrible day. Please take time this month to honor our emergency personnel, i.e. fireman, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, police, hospital staff, armed forces, the Red Cross as well as the many emergency non-profit organizations. San ClementeVillas would like to thank our First Responders for being there for all of us!
