Happy Summer from the “West Indies”

rowing up as a child, I was very fortunate to have two greataunts and a great-uncle living next door to us. My elegant aunts allowed me access to dusty attic trunks full of beautiful hats and clothes, beads and brooches, and spritzes of cologne from the lovely glass atomizers on their dressing tables. Many a Summer day was spent enjoying a picnic in all of our finery in the garden my Aunt Hilda tended daily. They insisted on cloth napkins and good manners, clean faces and hands, and sitting up straight. Aunt Edna made the most delicious scones I’ve ever tasted, and we would sit outdoors for hours, visiting and enjoying the Summer sun. Our Uncle John was a stately gentleman who had been a judge, and although he was rather stoic my younger brother could always manage to coax him and his driver Jim to take us on outings for ice-cream on a hot afternoon. These genteel ladies taught me the importance of attention to detail, as well as how to embroider, bake, garden and sew. Overall, I learned that” gracious living is the result of meticulous planning” asAunt Edna would say. No guest came to visit that was not met with a warm smile, a good cup of tea, and a well cooked meal or “nosh” as she called any food eaten out of the timeframe of a meal. As we welcome August here at San Clemente Villas by the Sea, I recall these Summer memories, and all of the effort that went in to making them special for us. My staff and I are working together to bring this same attention to detail to all of the events and services that we provide to you; our residents, and to assure that all of our residents enjoy themselves, even during these challenging times. Please know that your suggestions will be met with a ready ear and an open mind. The San Clemente Villas staff and I are available to discuss your suggestions and concerns personally, through voice mail, or email. Drop by for a visit, or drop a note in the suggestion box at the Front Desk. Our passion is, and should always be, to make your lives better.

Here’s to a beautiful Summer!

Marketing Check-in: Happy 4th of July

ezmeralda lopez dianna mendoza

It’s unbelievable to say we’re in July already. Due to Quarantine I feel that half of the year just went by and we didn’t even notice. COVID-19 brought me closer to my family and it reminded me that I need to stop and reach out to family whom I hadn’t visited in a long time. I picked up my phone and called a lot of my aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends to make sure they were doing well and see if they needed anything. At home we have been spending a lot of time together watching movies, listening to music and even playing board games together - something we hadn’t done in a long time. Both my kids got to get home-schooled by their aunt. At first it was all very nice, but after a while my sister-in-law would tell me “I don’t know how these teachers do it!” I laughed at first and then when I took a couple days off work and helped her at home I was ready to get back to work as soon as possible. I would like to say thank you to all the essential workers here at San Clemente Villas. Thank you for all you do. And a big thank you to all the nurses, doctors, grocery store workers, and first responders - all of you are there for us. 2020 is a year we will never forget and I feel like it has brought all of us closer together and we will continue to get through it together.

We would like to give a warm welcome to new resident Anne G! Happy Birthday to resident Don L. July 12th and employee’s Alicia Aguilera on the 18th as well as employee Ana Aparicio on the 19th. July is such a great month if you love warm weather, Fourth of July celebrations and kicking back on the beach! TheWest Indies residents will be enjoying our weekly barbecues, relaxing on the patio and beautiful scenic rides! I asked some of our residents what special Fourth of July memory they had. Ray R. loved watching water fireworks in Thailand! Viola M. lived in a small town in Kansas with her 12 brothers and sisters and they would go to a park and her Dad would cook a large pot of beans. Luckily they had a large porch where they would watch the fireworks! John P. said his parents built a swimming pool in their yard and they invited the neighbors over for Fourth of July. I asked if they brought food to share. He said no but they brought their children! Pat R. wore all blue and dressed her children up as firecrackers to join in with the town parade! Take time out this Fourth of July to be thankful and remember our Veterans who fought for the freedom we have today! We should have be full of pride and honor to be Americans! We need to work together peacefully to fix any injustices and improve upon what we have!

The West Indies Staff and residents wish everyone a wonderful and safe Fourth of July! Have a relaxing summer!

July 2020 Employee of the Month

John McKownJohn McKown

John is a worker that we consider to be a big asset to our team. He is an incredible employee recognized and elected by both his co-workers and residents. He is a kind man full of soul and compassion. Let me tell you a little bit more about why John is this month’s employee of the month. John was born in Torrance, California. He is the only boy and has three sisters that he went to school with. He was raised in San Pedro and graduated from San Pedro High School. He was born on the hottest day on record in Torrance on September 1st, 1955. Growing up he was introduced to surfing and fell in love with it. He traveled all over the world to surf. Places like the North Shore of Hawaii, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and many more places. He went to Saddleback College and got his Associate degree. He worked for AT&T for 36 years. Then he retired, but decided to still pick up another job because his wife is a paralegal who won’t stop working. So he decided that the best fit would be to work in a retirement home because his mother-in-law was in an assisted living place and he loved the way they were treating her, so he wanted to be a part of something like that. He also had a VERY, very deep love for his grandparents so he thought it would be a perfect fit. He says that he absolutely loves working here at San Clemente Villas. He loves the family atmosphere, the residents and his coworkers. He believes that “whatever little he gives to people comes back to him tenfold.” One thing he highly emphasized is that the biggest treasure he has is his wife Lori and “when you get me, you get her, because she’s the one that sends the little gifts like the soaps and the chocolates. She’s very generous and she loves to share and I love to share it with her.” They’ve been married almost 37 years. They are both HUGE animal lovers and absolutely love people & cherish friendships. John would like to add that he is so grateful to be a part of such a lovely work place with people he feels are like one great big family. Congratulations John on being Employee of the Month!

June 2020 Employee of the Month

Pedro RuizPedro Ruiz

Pedro has been working at the Villas since 2002, in fact, since San Clemente Villas first opened! He started working here because of Paul and Aileen. He used to work at Baker’s Square. Paul and Aileen would take all of their employees to eat there so Paul hired Pedro because he loved his cooking. Pedro explains that Baker’s Square was like a Carrow’s or Denny’s, a casual place to spend time and eat great food. Pedro has two daughters and two grandchildren. As a pastime, Pedro likes to go fishing. One time he was fishing at the Harbor and was about to throw the bait over and Aileen and Paul just so happened to pass by walking their dog, and their dog munched all of the bait up. So Paul and Aileen would always remind him of that story and they laughed about it a lot. Pedro likes working here because he wants the residents to eat appetizing food and receive good service. Pedro would like to share that he likes to enjoy life and go out to meet the world. He likes to travel to Mexico. The farthest south he’s been has been Colombia. We are very happy to have Pedro as part of the Staff. Congratulations on being Employee of the Month, Pedro!

Meet the Nurses

We have some new faces here at the 'Villas!

Kristin Rodriguez - Wellness Nurse

I am a California native. I was born in Long Beach. I graduate from Long Beach Poly. After I graduated I joined the Air Force and was a MWR- Morale welfare and recre- ation specialist. My job duties in- cluded working the fitness center and in the mortuary. I was released with an honorable discharge due to pregnancy. I stayed home and raised my three children and then in 2006 I started part time nursing school. I graduated in 2009 and then started working at Villa Valencia as a med tech and then became the Wellness Nurse there until coming to San Clemente Villas by the Sea. My dad was a nurse in the cardiac cath lab. I was able to watch an open heart sur- gery and then knew I wanted to be a nurse. I choose to work in assisted living instead of being a cardiac nurse because while in nursing school working with the eld- erly population was so rewarding. My goal is to become an RN in the future. I love what I do each and every day.

Cara Deiro - Director of Clinical Services

My favorite animals are Horses and English Bull dogs. I was born in Memphis Tennessee down the street from Elvis Presley. My dad was in the Marines and we move to the El Toro Marine base when I was 13. My Grandmother and my mother were both nurses and my great great Grandfather was a Doctor in Silerton Tennessee. I grew up hanging out at hos- pitals and nursing homes. At the age of 16 I became a Certified Nursing Assistant and worked in skilled nursing with my mom as my supervisor. My senior year of High School I completed a Medical Assistant program and went to work for a dermatologist and became a surgical assistant. I graduated Nursing school in 1993 and worked for Lake Forest Nursing Center for 17 years as an LVN and Di- rector of Staff Development. I have been in management most of my nursing career in skilled nursing and Assisted Living communities. I be- lieve that Nursing is the Gentle Art of caring. It is my passion in life to follow my family’s footsteps and doing what I can to enhance the lives of the residents I care for each and every day. Any Questions or con- cerns, please feel free to reach out to me at the community or email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Happy Mother's Day from the “West Indies”

rey santos
Lupe Ruvalcaba
leslie brazeau

This year Mother’s Day is observed on May 10th. It is time to honor all mothers for their love and contributions to their family! What is a mom? Well I really don’t think there is a sheet of paper large enough to list everything that they are! So moms, just kick back and relax Mother’s Day is your day! I asked our residents siblings to share something heartwarming or funny about their mother. Viola’s daughter Barbara replied “my mom was an accomplished pianist”. She gave many years to the church playing for Sunday services. I loved hearing her play when we were practicing for church or just playing what she liked. She taught me to play. I got many years of joy at the piano. Thanks Mom! Patricia R. sons Rick and Phil said she always knew how to throw a great party! Once in Spain in 1969 she didn’t just hire a band but instead an entire Choir and Guitar band from the local Medical College known as “Tunas”!

Rick and Phil were only 11 and 7 but we were blown away. See photo below. Everybody danced and sang. Our young Spanish maid was 19 and she fell in love with the handsome young men!

Everyone at the party had so much fun lots of martinis and hangovers! Dora V. daughter Brenda replied “Dear Mommy, One of the fondest memories I have of you was your ability to comfort me in troubling times or when I was upset about something. You would sit me on your lap and hug me until I would stop crying. Then you would make me drink a glass of water. It was like magic. During this time of the pandemic, I could really use one of those hugs! It’s very difficult for me not to be with you right now, but I know how well you are taken care of at the Villas, and I know how wonderful the staff treats you! I love you mom!”

We would like to wish a Happy Birthday to residents Claude C. 3rd, Karin H. the 5th, Patricia R. 15th, Trinidad B. on the 19th and John P. 28th. Also our Med Tech Dollie on the 29th! Even with this exhausting pandemic please try to enjoy each day as much as you can. Life passes by so quickly.

Love to all! Take care and keep safe! From Leslie, Rey, Joe and all the West Indies staff and Residents!

Luis Ceja is an excellent employee here at San Clemente Villas. He was nominated this month for his willingness to work hard and show up on time with a positive attitude. Luis is 19 years old. He is the second oldest out of his siblings. He has one brother and two sisters. He loves to spoil his younger brother with gifts and video games. They have a really tight older and younger brother relationship. He also has an amazing group of friends. They love to go out to places like Knott’s Berry Farm, Six Flags, bowling, miniature golf, cart racing etc. One of the things that Luis loves doing is going to the movies a lot. He likes all types of movie genres. Luis has been working here at San Clemente Villas since 2018, when his cousin Christian Ceja (a former employee) recommended that he should apply. Since then he has loved working here. He started off as a food server and is now a Prep Cook. He loves to be able to help people out and also make people happy. He also enjoys being able to learn how to cook and acquire new skills in the kitchen. A lot of his best friends work in the kitchen with him so he feels as if it is home for him. He values his relationships with friends and family a lot. He says he wants to work so he can save money to one day travel around the world. His ultimate goal would be to visit Spain one day so that he could watch his favorite Argentine soccer player Lionel Messi. For now he just loves to take it day by day and see where life takes him. We are very honored to have an employee like Luis as part of our Staff.

Happy Easter from the “West Indies”

April showers will bring May flowers, so don’t let the rain get you down! There’s great weather ahead! Residents will be enjoying beautiful scenic rides and weekly barbeques!

We would like to give a warm welcome to our new resident Betty M! Happy Birthday to our beautiful residents Betty D. 4/10, Carol T. 4/13, Dolly V. 4/19 and Martha C. 4/28! On April 1st don’t believe everything you hear!

As you know, April Fool’s Day each year is celebrated by playing practical jokes on each other! Happy Easter on April 12th! It has always been an exciting time of the year! Our residents will be busy decorating eggs, having an egg hunt and eating chocolate bunnies! Of course this isn’t the real reason we celebrate Easter. As Christians, we celebrate Easter as the day of Jesus Christ’s resurrection.

I would like to take a moment to reflect on our manager Rey Santos. He is a man that works very hard to keep our Department together. He has earned the trust from our Staff and Resident families. He is always trying to make everything around us better! We are very fortunate to have him on our team!

Have a warm and wonderful month from Leslie, Rey, Joe and all the West Indies staff and Residents!

Marketing Check-in: Happy Easter

ezmeralda lopez dianna mendoza

Holidays are many things to many people. For some, the primary function of a holiday is its religious significance. It is a time when specific spiritual opportunities are available to experience. For others, holidays are primarily about family getting together. Most people do not work and so there is an opportunity to renew family bonds. Relatives that you haven't seen in a while join together with you to celebrate the family that you belong to. People that do not have large families or may not want to join together with them may celebrate with friends. Enjoy this time with your loved ones and remember to always tell them how much they mean to you and how much you love them. (Be sure to see our Notary Ad in our April newsletter.)

2020 easter

In Abundance of Optimism

We are publishing our April Newsletter. We are doing the best we can to keep our precious seniors safe at this time. Life goes on at the Villas and all around us. Our thinking is that it would be much easier to let our entertainers, vendors, residents and family know that plans must be cancelled, than to not have prepared any plans at all. Hence, our April Calendar. However, we pray, and hope our prayers are heard, that COVID-19 will disappear as quickly as it came. Please join us in those prayers, and watch for updates as our Executive Director sends out text message notices.

April 2020 Employee of the Month

jace rodriquezjpgJace Rodriquez

Jace is an amazing employee here at San Clemente Villas. She has been working in the Villas since 2016. She came to work here straight out of high school. Jace enjoys art. She especially loves portraits and anime cartoons. She loves to travel and would love to make more trips in the future when she gets the time to. Jace dreams of one day being able to visit places like New York, South Korea, Iceland, Japan, and all places of Mexico. She just recently made a trip to Cancun with her best friend. Jace loves the beaches down in Cancun. She loves the water. She very much enjoys the underground rivers and the Cenotes, which are sinkholes or natural pits resulting from collapsed limestone bedrock that expose the water that normally flows beneath the surface. Jace also enjoys going to concerts, and anime expos. Jace is a very adventurous person. She would love to start doing more adventurous things in her life like skydive, bungee jumping and anything that involves an adrenaline rush. She would love to one day own a tiny home here in the U.S or in Ireland. She also has the dream of owning a loft or a tiny home somewhere in South Korea (Seoul or Daegu) or (Tokyo or Osaka). Her mother Bertha Garcia is another incredible worker here at the Villas. She works as a caregiver. Jace also has her older sister working in the kitchen, she is one of the servers. Her name is Nancy. Jace’s younger sister is 14 years old and she enjoys spending time with her. Jace loves to work at San Clemente Villas. She loves talking to the residents and sharing time and laughter. She started here as a server and then Eleonora offered her a job as a full time receptionist. We are very happy and honored to have an employee who is so patient and dedicated. Jace is an amazing asset to the team!

Happy St. Patrick's Day from the “West Indies”

We would like to give a warm welcome to our new resident John P.! Happy Birthday to our Manager Rey Santos 3/13/72 and our beautiful resident Sandy 3/20/26!

We are looking forward to daylight savings time March 8th bringing us more sunshine throughout the day! How exciting! Spring is in the air, beginning March 19th warmer weather ahead! Residents will be relaxing on the patio!

Well the “lucky month of March” has arrived! We have leprechauns, rainbows and pots of gold lurking among us! There seems to be a little bit of Irish in all of us celebrating and having fun! Make sure you wear green or you’ll get pinched! Do you know why? The Country of Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle; therefore Countrymen are expected to wear green in honor of their country. If you do not wear green your fellow countrymen will pinch you to remind you that you are of Irish decent!

I would like to thank all the West Indies Staff for all their hard work and dedication every day! There is a lot of love, compassion and understanding from every staff member, and it is shown in many ways! Wishing you all the luck of the Irish and a Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

From Leslie, Rey, Nurse Joe and all the West Indies Staff have a happy, safe, and healthy New Year!

March 2020 Employee of the Month

Dollie Dayacap DayAna Mendoza

Ana Mendoza is an amazing caregiver here at San Clemente Villas. Ana is from San Luis Potosí Mexico. She came to California about 10 years ago from Mexico. She began to work at San Clemente Villas when one of the previous employees recommended it to her. She came to apply and got hired within a few days. In August it will be eight years since she started as an employee in the West Indies department. Ana is currently living with her brother and father. Her mom and three sisters live in Mexico. She likes to go visit them when she gets the time to take off work. Ana just got married last year. She met her husband Jose, eight years ago in Mexico. Together they like to travel to different spots in Mexico. She is planning on taking a trip to Cancun with him. Ana loves to shop. Her favorite places include Burlington, Marshalls and T.J. Maxx. Right now her goals are to study to get her CNA certification and then later become a nurse. She is passionate about people and making connections with them. That is why she loves to work here at the Villas. She says she loves to talk to the residents about their life stories and getting to learn from them. She thinks of the residents as her family. She doesn’t have her grandparents close, so she feels as if she is blessed to be around the elders. She believes that in order to have a job as a caregiver you must be patient, and caring and understanding about the needs of the residents. We are very grateful to have her here as part of the staff. Congratulations on being chosen “Employee of the Month” Ana!

February 2020 Employee of the Month

Dollie Dayacap DayDollie Dayacap-Day

Dollie is an extraordinary woman and employee here at San Clemente Villas. She has been with us for coming on 13 years on May 11th. When she started back in 2007, she began as a caregiver for 1-2 months and then moved on to becoming a Med-Tech for the rest of the years. She’s worked here in assisted living for ten years and three years in WI. Her hobbies include dancing. She likes anything, from classical swing to modern pop and hip hop. Dollie is the life of the party! She likes to listen to mellow music and relax as well. She is a mother of four, 3 daughters and 1 son. Dollie says that thanks to the Villas and the years she’s worked here, her daughter Maxine is now a dentist in the Philippines. That is something she will always be grateful for. The other 3 children also graduated college. She is a proud mother. Dollie wants nothing more but to see her children be happy and choose the right person to share life with. She says that she has really enjoyed the years that she has worked here in the Villas and claims, “As long as the Villas is here, I will be here forever.” She says that every day is a learning experience. She is so grateful for the people she has met here. Dollie says that she gets along with many different types of people. With a smile, Dollie says that when people learn that she is a Med-Tech at the Villas they treat her even better. She said San Clemente Villas is like her “bread and butter.” Dollie is a faith-filled woman and her only wish in life is to keep on enjoying life for the rest of her years. “God is so good, he guides me every day. I wake up every morning thanking him for life.” We are very lucky to have Dollie as an employee here at the Villas. Her energy is a light to all who live here and the ones who work with her as well.

Marketing Check-in: Happy New Year 2020!

ezmeralda lopez dianna mendoza

Happy New Year 2020!

It’s a new Decade! Dianna and Esme would love to wish you a prosperous and healthy 2020! The New Year is bittersweet. It is nice to go forward and make resolutions but it is sad to see another year slip by. I’m making the resolution to slow down and experience pleasurable moments a little longer especially with my kids. Time passes by very quickly and we tend to forget to really enjoy life and our surroundings more. We are so happy and blessed to have gained a lot of new residents this past year and looking forward to the new resident’s that will be moving in this next year. At the villas we have many events throughout the year where you can come enjoy the music, try our dining room, visit with residents, and enjoy each other’s company. One thing that I love about San Clemente Villas is that we are all a family here.

We wish you the best and brightest New Year!

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE “WEST INDIES”! A special thanks to all the San Clemente Villas Residents and families for contributing to our West Indies employee appreciation bonus! All our employees appreciated it so much! We will be celebrating Martin Luther King’s Birthday on January 15th. Happy Birthday to handsome resident Ray R! 1/30/33! He always has a warm smile for you! As we pack up our Holiday decorations and reflect on the past year and all that has occurred, it makes one sit down and think about all of the changes in our lives, some good, some not. It is best to reflect on all that has been a blessing and all the lessons we have learned. In the beginning of the New Year we make a lot of promises to others and to ourselves. Our goals are real and we believe that we will accomplish them. So with positive thought and lots of ambition we settle into the New Year! Now it’s time for New Year’s resolutions! Save money, lose weight and exercise. Just try to get through life the best way you can. Try to take a little more time for yourself! Life passes by so quickly! I don’t know about you but as much as I love the Holiday Season, but I do let out a sigh of relief when it’s passed. Social commitments slow down and it’s time to relax! Enjoy the Season and your family!

From Leslie, Rey, Nurse Joe and all the West Indies Staff have a happy, safe, and healthy New Year!
