March 2021 Employee of the Month

Jace Rodriguez

Jace has been working in the Villas since 2016. She came to work here straight out of high school. She especially loves portraits and anime cartoons. Jace dreams of one day being able to visit places like New York, South Korea, Iceland, Japan, and all places of Mexico. She just recently made a trip to Cancun with her best friend. Jace loves the beaches down in Cancun. She loves the water. She very much enjoys the underground rivers and the Cenotes, which are sinkholes or natural pits resulting from collapsed limestone bedrock that expose the water that normally flows beneath the surface. Jace also enjoys going to concerts, and anime expos. Jace would love to one day own a tiny home here in the U.S or in Ireland. Perhaps a loft or a tiny home somewhere in South Korea (Seoul or Daegu) or (Tokyo or Osaka). Jace loves to work at San Clemente Villas. She loves talking to the residents and sharing time and laughter. She started here as a server and then was offered a job as a full- time receptionist. We are very happy and honored to have an employee who is so patient and dedicated. Jace is an amazing asset to the team.

February 2021 Employee of the Month

Phyllis OgunbuyiPhyllis Ogunbuyi

This month of February our recognized employee is Phyllis Ogunbuyi. Phyllis is a wonderful employee. She is hardworking, dedicated and always has a positive attitude. Phyllis was born in Tennessee and later moved to Santa Monica, CA when she got married. She has three children- two boys and one girl. Phyllis went to school to get her Cosmetology license and worked within the field, moving her way up to a manager position. Phyllis and her family moved to Orange County because her daughter wanted to go to Irvine University High School. While Phyllis was working in Orange County as a manager, she felt guilty because she worked a lot and wasn’t devoting enough time to her kids. She decided to be a stay-at- home mom but quickly became bored when her children were at school. She picked up some courses in child development to learn more about being a mother and raising children.

From that, Phyllis worked as a teacher’s Aid in Laguna Niguel Maria Montessori School and during the night she picked up shifts at Villa Valencia. During that time her mother and father were in Nevada. Phyllis went to Nevada to take care of her mother after her father passed on. She later brought her mother to live in Laguna Woods. She did that from 2009- 2015.

Phyllis wanted her mother to experience her great grandchildren and be able to spend her last years with them. Phyllis was being trained by Social Services to take care of her mother. During that time, she spent a lot of time learning about the different stages of aging. Her mother unfortunately transitioned in 2015. Phyllis then returned to work in 2016 to senior living.

She also worked for a homeless shelter in Santa Ana. She learned so many things regarding personalities, disabilities, illnesses, etc. At this point she had a lot of knowledge regarding senior care as well, with the experience of taking care of her mother throughout the years. May of 2020, Phyllis came to the San Clemente Villas by the Sea. Cara (LVN) and Amelia (Care Coordinator) were so welcoming.

Phyllis loves to work for the San Clemente Villas by the Sea, there’s a good energy flow.

She is very kind and loving with our staff and our residents. She tries to learn each individual to the core to provide them great service. “Sometimes they just need someone to talk to and sometimes they just need a chamomile tea.”

She says that she feels part of a community and a family. She uses the word “one-ness” to describe the sense of togetherness: “we are all individuals but we become one.” She also wants to add that she would like to thank her coworkers and acknowledge them. “You are all amazing and awesome, thank you so much for the experience that you have given me.” We are happy that her life experiences brought her to working in senior care and she is now a part of our team.

We would like to give a special thank you to all the San Clemente Villas Residents for their contributions to our Employee Bonus! It was very much appreciated! I would like to thank all our employees who have been working during COVID-19, we know you have worked very hard and we truly admire your dedication, “thank you for a job well done”. We would like to wish a Happy Birthday to resident Ray Rapeepat on January 30th he will be 88 years young! He always has a warm smile for you! As we pack up our Holiday decorations and reflect on the past year and all that has occurred, it makes one sit down and think about all the changes in our lives, some good, some not. It is best to reflect on all that has been a blessing. In the beginning of the year we make a lot of promises to others and to ourselves, our goals are real and we believe that we will accomplish them. Try to settle into the New Year with positive thoughts and lots of ambition! Have a safe, happy, and healthy New Year!

January 2021 Employee of the Month

Nancy RodriguezNancy Rodriguez

Nancy Rodriguez is an essential employee here at San Clemente Villas by the sea. She was born in Mission Viejo Hospital. She is 25 years old. Nancy likes to go thrift store shopping, she collects toys and pastel colored 80’s and 90’s fashion. Her goal right now is to live on her own but she says that the rent is too high to do that. Her family consists of her dad Juan, her mom Bertha (who is a caregiver here), younger sibling Jace (who is at the front desk), and youngest sister Denise who just started High School. Her mother Bertha suggested working at the Villas since it's a very fast commute (5 minutes walking!). She’s been working here for 5 years as a server. “I've had a lot of fun years here, and have met some very warm hearted people, coworkers and residents alike. My motto is ‘if you see something wrong, be brave and speak up, since there's a lot of injustice in this world.’” Nancy is a very hard worker and definitely has the skills of an excellent employee. We are very happy to have her as part of the team.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from the “West Indies”

rey santos
Lupe Ruvalcaba
leslie brazeau

Christmas is an exciting time of the year with family, friends, lights, decorations, cheery music and festive holiday meals! This is a day of the year to remind us we have so much to be thankful for! So, what is the spirit of Christmas? The answer can be said in one sentence “giving without the thought of getting”. In the West Indies that means serving and giving with extra love and care. We know this is what makes the residents feel the spirit of Christmas!

Remember it’s not what’s under the tree that counts what matters is who is gathered around it!

May your family Holidays be filled with joy and peace! Have a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Blessings to All!

December 2020 Employee of the Month

Nadia PonceNadia Ponce

Nadia Ponce was born in Bueno Aires, Argentina. She is the second oldest of 10 kids. Nadia has three children, two of which worked here at the Villas. Martina, her youngest, was a server and her eldest daughter Daiana works as an Activities assistant. She enjoys walking out in nature and being with her family. She also loves to make desserts. She would love to perfect that craft and one day be able to sell pastries. She started working at the villas in 2004. She has worked in all departments. Laundry maintenance then moved to dishwashing and prepping food. Her mother Maria had started off first and recommended that she come work with her since she loved the place. After that, a lot of her family started working here for many years and they brought more people in to work. She enjoys working at the Villas, loves the ambiance and to help in any way she can. When she was a teenager about 14 years of age, she had visited a retirement home in Argentina. She said that one day she saw herself working in the senior community. Nadia likes to contribute “in the smallest way” to a place like this with a beautiful purpose. Nadia says that she tries to lend a hand always and comes to work every day “because it is a responsibility and we all have to play a part to make it better.”

Happy 18th Anniversary San Clemente Villas from the “West Indies”

The San Clemente Villas has been serving residents and the community for 18 years! It's a wonderful place to call home with a caring and loving staff! We would like to give a warm welcome to Jane C.! Happy October Birthdays to our residents Faye H. 10/4, Anne G. 10/10, Caroline P. 10/19,Yuri L. 10/24, OscarA. 10/25, andMarguerite R. 10/27! I would like to focus on memories from our residents with October Birthdays! (Coincidentally, we don’t have any residents with September birthdays!)

Oscar A. looks great for 94 years of age! His daughter Gilda said her father was an uncomplicated man. He loved having the kids around, it was painful for him when we grew up and left home. Tears ran down his cheeks as he took photos of her wedding knowing she would be departing for an overseas assignment.

Beautiful Marguerite R. age 88 remembers going to a pet adoption place on her birthday and falling in love with a dog named Gigi. Her friend adopted Gigi and let Marguerite help care for the dog! Beautiful Faye H. is age 85. Her favorite thing to do on her birthday was to have her kids and grandchildren over to enjoy a special meal of her husband’s perfectly grilled barbeque ribs! It is a memory that will last forever!

Anne G., so cute! She’s 84 said she really enjoyed going to watch horse racing on her birthday! Her favorite race was the Kentucky Derby! Caroline P., so pretty! When she was 61 she drove to Mexico for her Birthday party. A dog kept running in and out of the party multiple times and everyone kept putting him back outside. When Caroline went to her car to head home the dog was in it. She named him Buddy. He ended up being the love of her life for 13 years!

Lana, daughter to handsome Resident Yuri L., age 94, said he always made sure that everyone was happy and having a great time at the birthday! He was full of life, had positive energy and lit up the room! He was the most gracious host and the life of the party. His last memorable birthday was spent in Mexico with his family. He loved swimming every day and eating at the Dessert Buffet with his grandchildren. “Love you dad!”

I know it has been very difficult and worrisome during this uncertain time with the coronavirus and knowing we don’t have any control over what is going on. Try to keep your faith, things always have a way of passing!

I would like to thank all the staff at the San Clemente Villas for working so hard together, trying to keep everyone safe and accommodate their needs.

From Leslie, Rey, Lupe and all the West Indies Staff

Marketing Check-in: Happy 18th Anniversary San Clemente Villas

2020 esmeralda lopez

The day I applied at the Villas and was hired I had no idea that I would be here 11 years later. I was a lot younger then of course. We have a lot of employees still working here since the very beginning that is so amazing and unheard of. Being privately owned and operated by the Brazeau family, the Villas is able to retain high caliber employees. Because of their attention to detail when selecting candidates to join their staff, our team is dedicated, committed and enduring. The Villas family is comprised of residents, staff and family. The staff looks after the residents with care and tenderness in their hearts. October also calls for Halloween. This year things are going to be a little different than what we’re used to, but I believe that the most important thing is to be with your family. In my case I enjoy every minute I have with my two boys.

September 2020 Employee of the Month

Enedina BelloEnedina Bello

Enedina has been married for 28 years and has three kids, one girl and two boys. Her husband Ricardo Bello is an incredible man and he is always very attentive. He seems strict but to make sure his kids have good discipline and have a great future. They both love to dedicate their all to their kids. Her daughter Kelly is now working for a Foster Care facility as a social worker and going for her Master’s degree. Her son Cristian is a Marine and has one more year to finish schooling at his University and her youngest, Andrew, is in his second year of high school. Her family is very united, whatever problem they have they resolve it as a family. The three of them are living with Enedina still. She loves to cook for them, she makes sure to have a meal done before she goes to work. During a period of time, her husband was left without work. So she went to apply as housekeeper but the only position was caregiver. She took the job and has been here ever since. Enedina has been working here at the Villas for about three and a half years. She loves to work here, saying she feels at home when she is here. Caring for the residents feels to her as if she is taking care of her family. She loves to help the residents with their needs. Enedina says that working here she learns to value life more and enjoy life in the moment. Enedina you are a cherished employee.

October 2020 Employee of the Month

Gigi RodriguezGigi Rodriguez

here at the Villas. She was born in Seattle but grew up in San Clemente. She was born on December 7th, 1998. “My horoscope is Sagittarius which describes me exactly as I am.” She loves to dance; we have seen her dance moves in our employee Christmas parties. Gigi says she also loves to travel. She says she hasn’t been to many places but loves Seattle, she loves California and to visit TeacalcoMorelos,Mexico where her dad is from. She is the oldest of eight siblings. She loves to take care of them, taking them to get food, desserts, the beach, or places they like. She prefers the pools over the beach, “which is funny because I live in California”. In high school she worked with disabled kids since her brother Hector had a disability. He is now gone but forever cherished. Working with disabled kids helped her get a better understanding of how to care for her brother while he was with her. Later after high school in Seattle, she studied to be a Phlebotomist. She later moved when she was about 19 years out of her dad's place and loves living with roommates. “It showed me to be more independent, to do things on my own, and value myself. My role model was grandmother Elena because she was so independent.” Her grandmother was a widow, she had nine kids and raised them all herself. When her parents divorced, her grandmother stepped in and raised Gigi and her brother until she was about 13 years old and moved in with her dad. She would take them to school every single day while she was a Nanny to some of the kids that she went to school with. On the side she would sell tamales and quesadillas. Gigi has been working here since February 2019. She says she loves it because she loves her grandma, so she treats the residents as if she was taking care of her grandma. This place has helped Gigi to learn more about residential care and how to deal with dementia. Her grandmother is at the beginning stages of dementia so it’s helped her educate the family. “Working here we realize that it’s the little things that matter.” She started working here because her best friend Rosa worked in residential care for three years and they both live down the street. She says she loves the environment here and the coworkers. “It is like a big family. You get to see so many personalities.”We are so happy to have you, Gigi, as part of our staff!

Welcome August! The summer is definitely here, so enjoy this beautiful weather, as time passes by so quickly! We would like to give a warm welcome to our new resident Irene L.! The West Indies residents will be relaxing on our patio, enjoying barbeques and beautiful scenic rides! I want to take a moment to thank all of our staff for everything they do for our residents! The daily kindness, patience and encouragement they provide is so important in our daily lives as we age. How fortunate we are to have a loving and caring staff here in the West Indies. As a little tribute to them I asked our residents if they had any comments to share. Virginia C. said their warm friendly smile and caring voice is enough to start her day off well! “It’s nice to know someone is always here to ask if I need any help.” Betty M. said she likes all the caregivers, they are very nice to her. They do their job without complaining. She said she’d like to give them a little something to show her appreciation! Don L. said, “Sometimes I lose track of time reading the newspaper in my room it is very helpful when they remind me that dinner is ready! I like the way they do my laundry. I have enjoyed some good times here with my wife!” Anne and Bob G. said, “It is wonderful how quickly they respond when help is needed. They are really special people and get the job done well! Marketing Check-in: Happy 4th of July

ezmeralda lopez dianna mendoza

It’s unbelievable to say we’re in July already. Due to Quarantine I feel that half of the year just went by and we didn’t even notice. COVID-19 brought me closer to my family and it reminded me that I need to stop and reach out to family whom I hadn’t visited in a long time. I picked up my phone and called a lot of my aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends to make sure they were doing well and see if they needed anything. At home we have been spending a lot of time together watching movies, listening to music and even playing board games together - something we hadn’t done in a long time. Both my kids got to get home-schooled by their aunt. At first it was all very nice, but after a while my sister-in-law would tell me “I don’t know how these teachers do it!” I laughed at first and then when I took a couple days off work and helped her at home I was ready to get back to work as soon as possible. I would like to say thank you to all the essential workers here at San Clemente Villas. Thank you for all you do. And a big thank you to all the nurses, doctors, grocery store workers, and first responders - all of you are there for us. 2020 is a year we will never forget and I feel like it has brought all of us closer together and we will continue to get through it together.

We would like to give a warm welcome to new resident Anne G! Happy Birthday to resident Don L. July 12th and employee’s Alicia Aguilera on the 18th as well as employee Ana Aparicio on the 19th. July is such a great month if you love warm weather, Fourth of July celebrations and kicking back on the beach! TheWest Indies residents will be enjoying our weekly barbecues, relaxing on the patio and beautiful scenic rides! I asked some of our residents what special Fourth of July memory they had. Ray R. loved watching water fireworks in Thailand! Viola M. lived in a small town in Kansas with her 12 brothers and sisters and they would go to a park and her Dad would cook a large pot of beans. Luckily they had a large porch where they would watch the fireworks! John P. said his parents built a swimming pool in their yard and they invited the neighbors over for Fourth of July. I asked if they brought food to share. He said no but they brought their children! Pat R. wore all blue and dressed her children up as firecrackers to join in with the town parade! Take time out this Fourth of July to be thankful and remember our Veterans who fought for the freedom we have today! We should have be full of pride and honor to be Americans! We need to work together peacefully to fix any injustices and improve upon what we have!

The West Indies Staff and residents wish everyone a wonderful and safe Fourth of July! Have a relaxing summer!

July 2020 Employee of the Month

John McKownJohn McKown

John is a worker that we consider to be a big asset to our team. He is an incredible employee recognized and elected by both his co-workers and residents. He is a kind man full of soul and compassion. Let me tell you a little bit more about why John is this month’s employee of the month. John was born in Torrance, California. He is the only boy and has three sisters that he went to school with. He was raised in San Pedro and graduated from San Pedro High School. He was born on the hottest day on record in Torrance on September 1st, 1955. Growing up he was introduced to surfing and fell in love with it. He traveled all over the world to surf. Places like the North Shore of Hawaii, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and many more places. He went to Saddleback College and got his Associate degree. He worked for AT&T for 36 years. Then he retired, but decided to still pick up another job because his wife is a paralegal who won’t stop working. So he decided that the best fit would be to work in a retirement home because his mother-in-law was in an assisted living place and he loved the way they were treating her, so he wanted to be a part of something like that. He also had a VERY, very deep love for his grandparents so he thought it would be a perfect fit. He says that he absolutely loves working here at San Clemente Villas. He loves the family atmosphere, the residents and his coworkers. He believes that “whatever little he gives to people comes back to him tenfold.” One thing he highly emphasized is that the biggest treasure he has is his wife Lori and “when you get me, you get her, because she’s the one that sends the little gifts like the soaps and the chocolates. She’s very generous and she loves to share and I love to share it with her.” They’ve been married almost 37 years. They are both HUGE animal lovers and absolutely love people & cherish friendships. John would like to add that he is so grateful to be a part of such a lovely work place with people he feels are like one great big family. Congratulations John on being Employee of the Month!
